Our coaching staff for each grade consists of a head coach and from 3 to 6
assistant coaches. Many of our coaches have athletes playing for SYFO. Some parent/coaches
follow their player from grade to grade while other coaches choose to stay at a specific
grade level. Head coaches are requested to volunteer at least 3 years at a specific grade
level. This is to keep consistency in the leadership and development of each grade level
program for 3 years or more. Assistant coaches are requested to volunteer for at least 2
years and may follow their player to the next grade level if that grade level has an
assistant coaching position opening.
Our coaches have varying backgrounds in football. Some have previous coaching
experience, some do not. Some coaches have played at high school and college levels,
and some have never played football. Previous coaching and playing experience can help when
coaching but is not required to become an SYFO coach. We are looking for people with
ambition, dedication, desire to help turn young athletes into football players and the
time to volunteer.
Coaching can be a year-round experience for our volunteer coaches.
In the off-season many of our coaches read books and watch videos on coaching football.
They can also attend coaching clinics in Wisconsin and Illinois. At the coaching clinics,
our coaches learn new skills to teach the players, pick up new coaching techniques,
watch demonstrations of new equipment, and talk with other coaches from youth level to
college level. SYFO covers the costs of the clinics our coaches attend.
All SYFO coaches are required to be NYSCA, WYSCO, PACE, or ASEP
certified and pass a complete background check. Coaches can be certified online by
NYSCA for a $25 fee which SYFO covers. To become NYSCA certified,

The certification online class covers basic football rules and safety issues related to
football, ending with a short online test. The total certification process takes from 1 to
2 hours, depending on your knowledge of football.
